Pepsi Admits Its Soda Contains Cancer-Causing Ingredients


Three years ago the Center for Environmental Health revealed the results obtained from their testing related to Pepsi soft beverage products. They have shown high amount of 4-Mel compound, which Pepsi has allegedly hidden from the public.

Of course, Pepsi Co. claimed that 4-Mel was not present in their products and they also said that even if it is present this compound is not harmful. In case you didn’t know, 4-Methylimidazole or simply 4-Mel is a substance that is created during the process of caramel coloring production. Many independent sources have confirmed that this substance is a carcinogen.

Even since this report was revealed, the popular company has been trying to avoid Californian laws and regulations which require placement of label that will warn the customers of the presence of carcinogens. Pepsi Co. should place such labels not only on their most popular product Pepsi, but also on Pepsi One and Diet Pepsi.

Not long ago, a class action lawsuit was filed against the company and a federal judge in the state of California has approved preliminary hearing. Pepsi Co. agreed to a settlement which included several actions that must be taken by the company.

For instance, Pepsi will make sure that 4-Mel will not go over 100 parts per billion in their products sold on the US market. In addition, they will perform special tests on all their sodas from time to time.

One of the most popular companies in the soft drink industry also accepted similar terms after a lawsuit filed last year. However, this latest lawsuit and settlement made them accept these terms not only for their products sold in California but all over the country.

Pepsi Didn’t do Anything to Make The Consumers Aware of The Presence of Carcinogens

So, this latest lawsuit was focused on proving that Pepsi Co. didn’t do anything to warn consumers that their drinks are packed with 4-Mel even though California lists this compound as a carcinogenic substance.

A test conducted by Consumer Reports two years ago has confirmed that the aforementioned chemical in Pepsi goes way over the allowed level (29 micrograms per can/bottle). This means that Pepsi Co. has violated common law and several statutes in California focused on consumer protection.

To be more precise, their decision to stay quiet about this goes against Proposition 65, a regulation that is 20 years old and which forces manufacturers to add visible warnings that their products come with cancer-causing or toxic elements.

The Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment of California decided to put the limit at 29 micrograms due to the fact that this amount lowers the chances of developing cancer that’s equal to 1 in 100.000.

Consumer Report also mentioned another report from 2013 published by Mintel and Leatherhead Food Research in which caramel coloring is presented as the most popular food coloring in the world. Two years ago Pepsi was trying to convince the public that they knew about 4-Mel and Proposition 65 but they believed that this regulation is here to warn people consuming products on a daily basis and since people don’t consume one can of Pepsi a day there is no need for such warning. Of course, the management of Consumer Reports didn’t accept this explanation.

According to Dr. Urvashi Rangan, a famous toxicologist, regardless of the amount of Pepsi people drink they should know that the drink includes a potential carcinogenic compound in it. In addition, he said that most scientists agree that 4-Mel should not be present in foods and drinks at all. He also added that Coke contains significantly lower levels of 4-Mel.

Is Consumption of Soft Drinks Really Worth It?

People who are taking good care of their health say that it’s completely illogical for individuals to get unnecessary exposure to harmful ingredients especially when we know that companies use them just to get different colors of their products.

Luckily, more and more people in the US are becoming aware of the importance of reading labels and learning more about the ingredients found in foods and drinks.

What is even more shocking is that this dangerous caramel-coloring found in Pepsi products is not the only dangerous ingredient found in it and in other soft drinks. Namely, these beverages are often blamed for the increased number of obese people.

According to a UCLA scientific study, people who drink one of these drinks on a daily basis have nearly 30% greater chances of becoming overweight or obese. This is quite logical because consumption of only one soft drink a day means adding almost 40 pounds of sugar in your diet a year.

By staying away from soft drinks, you will lower the chances of developing cancer, obesity and diabetes. This is definitely something that you should try right away.
